Cremation Process and Timline

We Choose Cremation. Now What?

How long does it take to get someone cremated?

After a family has made a decision for their loved one to be cremated, one of the questions we are most frequently asked is “What is the process to get someone cremated?” or “How long does it take to get cremated remains back?” If this is your first time dealing with this process, you may have a lot of questions and we are here to help walk with you through this journey each step of the way. Many of these process vary from state to state.

Before a cremation can happen the following steps need to occur

  1. The funeral director meets with the family to obtain information used to complete the death certificate and obtains permission for cremation (the Next of Kin signs a cremation authorization.)
  2. The funeral home contacts the attending physician to confirm that the doctor will sign the death certificate.
  3. The death certificate is sent to the doctor to enter the cause of death information
  4. The doctor forwards the death certificate back to the funeral home.  The funeral home completes the record and sends it to the medical examiner for approval
  5. The medical examiner reviews the cause of death and either gives approval or will take jurisdiction over the case. Because cremation is a final  disposition, all due diligence must be done to get the cause of death prior to the cremation.
  6. The State of Florida approves the record and it is assigned an authorization number and the cremation can be scheduled

Because of all of these steps, we usually tell families the whole process can take up to a full working week. Under Florida Law, the minimum amount of time to wait is 48 hours from the time of death.
