Lowe, Dr. Wilburn James- Dr. Jim Lowe, known to many of his friends and relatives as "Shorty," went to join his parents and six siblings in Heaven on July 9. He had been diagnosed with dementia of the Alzheimer’s type in 2008, which was further complicated over the past six weeks by recurring pneumonia. Jim was 83 years old. He was known by all to be the sweetest, kindest, hardest-working man who ever walked the face of this Earth. Jim was born and raised in Canton, North Carolina. He attended Mars Hill College and went on to the University of North Carolina to earn his Bachelor of Science in Dentistry in 1954 and his Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1955. He joined the Air Force after dental school and served as a Captain at Eglin Air Force Base for two years. After that, he went back to the University of North Carolina to earn his Master of Science in Orthodontics in 1958. Jim began his orthodontic practice in Daytona Beach in 1958, and quickly became active in dental organizations: The Central District Dental Association, The Florida Dental Association, American Dental Association, the Florida Association of Orthodontists, The Daytona Beach Dental Study Club and was a past president of The Volusia/Flagler Dental Association. Jim also served on the administrative Board of Sun Bank where he was a past Chairman, and he was instrumental in the formation of Tomoka State Bank. Jim married a local girl, Deanie Cates, in 1959-and during their almost 53 years together, they enjoyed raising four fine sons who have remained local and who have been a joy and salvation to their parents over the years, especially during these past trying weeks. Predeceasing Jim were his parents Walter Warden Lowe and Olive Marie Lowe, as well as his full brother Walter A. Lowe and his half brothers and sisters Paul, Roy, and Ola Holland, plus Wylie and Ruth Lowe. Left to cherish Jim’s memory are his wife, Deanie Lowe, their sons Mike Lowe with wife Kelly and children Danny, Chrissy, and Stephanie; Steve Lowe with his children Tiffany and Kevin (and former wife Teresa); Dr. David Lowe with wife Dr. Jean Chang Lowe and children Max and Marley; and Rodger Lowe with wife Sharon and son Morgan. Also remembering "Shorty" fondly will be several nieces and nephews and high school friends in Canton, NC. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be sent in Jim’s name to the Center for the Visually Impaired, Inc. at 1187 Dunn Ave., Daytona Beach, Fl 32114. A Celebration of Life will be held at Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 129 N. Halifax Ave. Daytona Beach on Sunday July 29th at 3:00 pm.
