Billie Vanest

Funeral service for Billie Rae Goins Vanest, 81, who returned to her Heavenly Father on August 30, 2011, will be held Saturday at 11:00 AM at the Dale Woodward Funeral Home, 167 Ridgewood Ave. Holly Hill with Pastor Ronnie Barton officiating. Entombment will follow at Shady Rest Cemetery. Friends wishing to call and pay their respects may do so Friday from 4:00 until 7:00 PM at the funeral home. Billie was born to the late Hallie and Guy Goins in Louisville, KY on May 1, 1930. When she was a young girl, her family moved to a farm in Mt. Washington, KY where she lived until moving to this area in 1963. Billie worked as a ward clerk at Halifax Hospital on the Psych floor and became inspired to go back to school to study nursing. Billie earned an Associates Degree in Nursing from Daytona Beach Junior College and a LPn license. She studied to become a Registered Nurse and returned to Halifax Hospital to work on the same ward she had worked years before. She went on to work for Humana Hospital then later retired from there. She enjoyed having lunch with her fellow nurses and maintained many of those friendships. Billie moved in with her daughter Sheila and was grateful to spend time with her grandson Chuck and later her granddaughter Angela. Billie was a member of Central Baptist Church and loved gardening, baking and cooking for her family. An avid ballgame fan, she loved playing cards, games, and using her computer to keep up with her children and grandchildren on Facebook and Skype. She was a immaculate housekeeper who set the example as a strong, independent fun-loving woman. Billie was predeceased by two sisters Lillian Ethington and Shirley Gentry, and her grandson Chuck Cassata. She was a loving mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother. Billie is survived by 4 children, C. Thomas Porter, Jr. (Karen) of New Braunfels, TX; Sheila Rhea Cassata (Tony) of Ormond Beach, FL; Lori Vanest Robbins of Ormond Beach, FL; and Dwight Allen Vanest (Kelly) of Ormond Beach, FL; a brother Donnie Goins (Barbara); a sister Jean Wiley (Jake); 8 grandchildren: David Porter, Erik Porter, Angela Cassata, Nicole Johnson, Natalie Derlinga, Lindsey Perry, Kristin Vanest, Troy Vanest; 6 great grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
